Noted author and researcher John Gottmann, PhD, cites contempt as the one characteristic he sees most often in couples who divorce. Contempt, defined by the dictionary, is an attitude of utter disgust or hatred: a powerful feeling of dislike toward somebody or something considered to be worthless, inferior, or undeserving of respect.

It’s not criticism or quarrelling; it’s the habitual putting down of the other person—telling them they are worthless, no good, or stupid.
